In today’s ever-changing beauty and fashion industry, it can be hard to keep up with what’s best for your skin and appearance. Beauty gurus all have a different opinion, and with so many loud marketing messages, it can seem like there’s no end in sight, no one right or wrong answer. In some ways, this is a good thing. With more options, there’s simply more for beauty enthusiasts to try and experiment with. However, if you’re going to invest in makeup you want to get the best possible products for your skin.
That’s why Raw Beauty offers vegan, natural mineral makeup. Vegan and cruelty-free makeup is essential to us (and to many of our customers) because it means we’re caring for the Earth while caring for ourselves. But, even if you’re a die-hard “top of the line” makeup advocate, there are plenty of reasons why you may still want to consider mineral makeup instead of synthetics used by popular brands.
Mineral makeup is made from ground or milled minerals such as iron oxides, talc, zinc oxide, and titanium dioxide. These highly-refined natural minerals create a similar texture and coverage to synthetic makeup, but contain no additives, preservatives, or other questionable chemicals. You may think this is only important to the tree-huggers, but it should be important to everyone. Natural makeup has several benefits that traditional cosmetics simply can’t compete with.
Natural makeup contains natural minerals (of course) and vitamins, such as Vitamin E & C that can nourish the skin even while you’re wearing it. While other cosmetics extract nutrients and dry the skin, natural makeup simply enhances your look. These absorbed nutrients can feed the skin, sometimes even helping to soothe damage caused by synthetic cosmetics.
For example, zinc is a common mineral used in natural makeup products. Zinc has also been proven as an anti-inflammatory agent that can soothe redness and irritation in the skin. Zinc oxide and titanium oxide are known to give skin a slight protective layer from the sun which, though not as powerful as sunscreen, can help reduce your chance of sunburn.
It shouldn’t be implied that when using natural makeup you’ll never see a blemish again. All makeup, whether natural or not, will tend to clog pores and irritate skin conditions like acne. However, no one should have to go without makeup all the time, and natural products do much less harm than traditional products. Those with sensitive or acne prone skin can use mineral-based makeup and reduce the exposure to their skin, all while providing protective and soothing vitamins to gain an improved complexion.
When using traditional makeup, you’ll also have to be wary of dangerous synthetics and preservatives. Makeup aluminums, phthalates, and parabens can all cause skin irritation and have been linked to more serious diseases later in life. Not to mention that aluminum mining is destructive to the environment and to the societies where it is most prominent.
When shopping for your next cosmetic purchase, think about what good quality mineral makeup can do for you. And don’t think that because it’s natural, it’s less effective. Mineral cosmetics have been used for centuries, and it won’t be going out of style any time soon.
