Eyeshadow 101: How to Create a Beautiful Look With Any Palette

Eyeshadow palette applying tips

Eyeshadow is perhaps the most artistic element of makeup. With the spectrum of color options, the different hues and the variety of ways it can be applied, blended and combined.

While there’s no right or wrong way to do your eyeshadow, there are good templates and basics to follow to get you on the right track. One you have an outline to follow, it’s easy to break the rules and modify the look to suit your look and style.

So whether you’re working with a rainbow palette and going for a magical unicorn look or sticking to neutrals for an everyday smokey eye, these basic tips will have your eye makeup on fleek.

To begin, choose a variety of colors that compliment your eye color. According to Health.com, here are some good starting points:

  • Brown eyes: Shimmery gold or jewel tones like sapphire blue, amethyst purple and emerald green.
  • Blue eyes: Peach, champagne, copper, terra-cotta and rust.
  • Green eyes: Pink, purple, rose gold and burgundy.
  • Hazel eyes: Gray, taupe or purple.

Before you begin applying the shadow, make sure you have the right tool to do so! A great eyeshadow brush is essential to having a blended and beautiful completed look.

Choose three different shadows for a simple yet sophisticated look. They should all compliment each other, but there should be one significantly darker (for contrast) and one significantly lighter (for highlight).

how to apply eyeshadow like a rock star

Begin by applying a base color across your entire eyelid, spreading it evenly and smoothly with your brush. Next, choose your darker color and focus it on the crease of your eyelid. It’s important to blend this color in so that it doesn’t just look like a dark stripe across your eyelid.

Finally, use your light color under your eyebrow on your brow bone and in the inside corner of your eye to brighten it. Again, remember to blend well! If you’re new at eyeshadow it may be helpful to have a friend check to make sure both of your eyes look symmetrical. It doesn’t need to be perfect, but another set of eyes is helpful.

Finish your eye makeup with mascara on your lashes and there you have it — a perfect eyeshadow look! Play with different color combinations to find your favorites and share your best looks on Instagram, tagging @rawbeautyminerals so we can see what creative looks you come up with!
