If you didn’t grow up learning how to use makeup or with a mom or older sisters who showed you how, the world of cosmetology can be intimidating.
There are countless types of products, brands, shades and tools. Not only do you have to figure out what to purchase, you then need to figure out how to use each tool and product. It’s great if you have a makeup-loving friend or family member to consult with as you learn, but if not, just use the mirror as your best guide as you learn to apply your makeup.
First things first, it’s important that you use products that are safe for your skin. Raw Beauty creates clean cosmetic products by avoiding a whole host of ingredients that can damage your skin. Typically, the fewer ingredients your cosmetics contain, the better.
Once you’ve read up a little bit on healthy cosmetics, it’s time to start filling your cart. What products should you start with, and how do you use them? Here’s the rundown on what to buy and what to do with each product for an easy, beginner makeup look.
-
Primer
Primer serves as a base for all of your other products. You don’t need much of it, but apply a thin layer to your entire face and rub it in with your fingertips, the same way you might use a moisturizer. -
Foundation
A liquid foundation will give you a classic, full-coverage look. Don’t go overboard on your product application! Start with a little bit and slowly build it up if you feel that you need more coverage. You can use a sponge, brush or your fingers to apply. -
Concealer
Have some tricky spots on your skin? Whether you want to conceal a pimple, other blemish or hide dark circles, concealer is your best friend. You concealer should be a shade or two lighter than your foundation to help brighten up the spots where you apply it. -
Finishing Powder
Once you’ve finished your concealer, use a setting powder to hold your cream or liquid products in place. Lightly dust your entire face with the powder, not using too much so that your skin doesn’t appear cakey. A big powder brush is essential for this step. -
Blush/Bronzer
Decide if you want a rosy glow, a sunkissed look or a combination of both. If you go with blush, dust it on the apples of your cheeks, blending it out so that you don’t just have two red circles. If you use bronzer, apply it where the sun would naturally hit - cheekbones, top of your forehead and your nose. -
Mascara
No makeup look is complete without mascara. If you’re not used to wearing it, try a brown shade to make it a little less dramatic. If your hair is dark, you’ll probably want to choose black so that there’s a noticeable difference in your lashes. It can take several layers of product to build up to your desired effect, so be patient as you apply! -
Lip Tint
Give your lips a little bit of color to finish off your look. A moisturizing tinted lip balm is a great intro to lipstick — it’s much more subtle, doesn’t dry your lips and is easy to reapply throughout the day. -
Extras!
As you master a basic makeup routine you can choose to use a shimmery highlighter on your cheekbones or a smokey eyeshadow on your lids. Don’t be afraid to experiment as you dive into the world of makeup. Have fun!
